Students learn to build their literacy skills through reading fictions and learning to decode new sight words through multiple strategies. Students focus on fine motor skills by practicing handwriting and orientation of letters. In math, students learn addition and subtraction with numbers up to 20, and practice place values, telling time, and counting coins. Social Studies lessons look at how a community is a collection of neighborhoods and community members and have rights and responsibilities. In science, students learn about plants, animals, energy, water, light, and soil.
Specials – STEAM, arts and crafts, physical education, music, and library are also taught on a rotating basis.
2nd Grade
Students learn to read for meaning and understanding. They build fluency, accuracy, and comprehension through various methods of reading. Students produce writing as they learn basic rules of grammar and are expected to use questions to gather information and clarify thinking. Students expand their study of geography and explore the development of communication and valuing differences and multiculturalism. Explore who we are! In science, students study land and water, weather and climate, behavior and life cycle of animals (habitats).

3rd Grade

4th Grade
Students learn to focus on pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and the final draft in the writing process. By 3rd grade, students should have transitioned from learning to read to reading to learn. In math, students learn multiplication and division strategies for numbers up to 100 and begin working with fractions and geometry. In Social Studies, students focus on basic structure of government, civics, and current events. In science, students learn about forces around us, surviving environment, and adaptations and variations.
